ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI) model trained by OpenAI, has been the talk of the tech world recently. With one million users joining within the five days of its launch, ChatGPT has been called the “fastest growing consumer application in history.” So what exactly is ChatGPT, and what makes it so revolutionary? Let’s ask the model:
The recent launch of this open-source, conversational AI model has been generating buzz not just for its advanced capabilities but its impact on the wider industry. On Monday, February 6, Google announced its own new AI service, Bard. Bard is an experimental conversational AI, powered by Google’s Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), that aims to “combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence, and creativity” of Google’s existing language models. Bard was officially released on March 21, and will be slowly rolled out to a small set of users in the US and UK. Google users can expect Bard to be incorporated more directly into Search, specifically in the form of features that will “distill complex information and multiple viewpoints into easy-to-digest formats, so you can quickly understand the big picture and learn more from the web.”
The pressure is seemingly also being felt by Microsoft, who pushed out a rushed announcement on Tuesday, February 7 of their own upcoming conversational AI model, running on a “new, next-generation OpenAI large language model that is more powerful than ChatGPT and customized specifically for search.” Similar to Google Search, this model will be incorporated directly into Bing’s search capabilities to improve the accuracy and relevance of search results. As Microsoft CEO Satya Natella explained, “AI will fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search.” Clearly, the race is on for tech giants and newcomers alike to harness the power of AI to create the most accurate and impactful model.
