Intro to Splunk
As digital transformation continues to evolve and the world becomes more interconnected, there is an increased demand for cybersecurity and data management. Cybersecurity is one of the fastest growing topics in technology and it requires the most attention and monitoring. On October 6, students attending the inaugural +Tech Literacy Download heard from two Solution Engineers at Splunk about the value of data, the basics of cybersecurity, and where the future of the industry is moving.
Splunk is a software company that produces several software and cloud solutions for searching, monitoring, reporting and analyzing big data via a web interface.
Value of Data
The Data Age (or the Information Age) is here and it is continuously changing the way the world interacts with customers, other gadgets and businesses globally. For an organization to thrive, it needs to be flexible within the tech industry and translate real-time insights into real-time actions. As the Splunk team mentioned, “Data makes things happen, and can transform how organizations interact with their customers.” For example, in communications, data can amplify customer experiences by supporting more devices in 5G. There are valuable use cases for data in financial services, retail and e-commerce, and communication.
According to the Splunk team, turning real-time data into action is complicated by the fact that traditional data strategies, environments and infrastructures aren’t prepared for the data age. Without the right strategy and platforms, rapid transformations and migrations add barriers to organizations and hinder them from innovating and turning data into actions. Some of the biggest complexities highlighted in the presentation were data silos, hybrid environments, legacy systems, fragmented cloud services, new cloud native apps, and point data management solutions.
Basics of Cyber
This is where Splunk comes in. Splunk is the world’s first data-to-everything platform for IT, Security, DevOps and Business Operations. It is designed to help companies to help act on data through decision-making, action-taking and create insights for every business outcome. Splunk offers solutions to investigate, monitor, analyze and act on data from any Structure, any Source and any Time Scale. Their services are designed to remove barriers between data and action so that everything can thrive in this data and digital age.
How can organizations use Splunk and similar tools to create opportunities with complex big data? Through Splunk’s robust investigative approach, organizations can send their unstructured data from any system, structure their data to meet their needs, react to changing circumstances, and take action through decision-making that drives impact across business. The biggest challenge in this digital age is taking big unstructured data and making something out of it.
More on Splunk as a Service: Splunk can help onboard data, users and generate value from data through SaaS, security protocol, encryption, develop resilient infrastructure, support and uptime. Additionally, Splunk also guides their customers through cloud transformation through enterprise-class scale, resilience and interoperability.
